River Dance: The Miami River Commission, the City of Miami,
and others involved will meet with County Manager Merrett
Stierhelm Oct. 22 to identify an official local sponsor-a
source of land and matching funds-for the Miami River dredging
project, said David Miller, managing director for the
river commission. "Miami-Dade County has been the informal
sponsor for 15 years," he said. "Now that federal
funds"-- $5 million-"have been appropriated, we have
to signify a formal sponsor."
River Sponsor: The county is local sponsor of choice
for the river dredging, Mr. Miller said. "We are hoping
that the acting sponsor will be the sponsor which is Miami-Dade
County, "he said. A county spokesperson said only that the
county has pledged to support and work with the Army Corps of
Engineers and federal officials during the clean-up.
